Genaro C. Armas/AP A flag urging customers to "Shop Local" is staked near a store in Boalsburg, Pa. , on Friday. Owners of small stores hope to get a boost from "Small Business Saturday." Saturday, wallets are expected to open yet again — this time for mom-and-pop stores. Main Street in Littleton, Colo. , is filled with them. The street is lined with small bars and restaurants along with other businesses, including a spice store and a men's clothing boutique. Dave Drake owns Colorado Frame and Savvy Stuff, the "savvy stuff" being women's accessories, purses, scarves and decorations. He's owned the store for 34 years.

Christopher says he doesn't expect small retailers to help with the job outlook anytime soon because they're being squeezed between the big chains stores on one side and the online companies on the other. "Small businesses are just having a hard time competing, given the financial meltdown and the anemic growth in its aftermath, especially on consumer spending, and they can't compete on prices, and they can't compete in terms of outreach, advertising and other issues like that. So they're really having a hard time of it." |

Key:
- Aggregate Sentiment is meant to be an indicator of an individual's overall sentiment.
- The Mean is meant to be an indicator of an individual's average comment sentiment.
- The Standard Deviation, when there are enough quotes, will indicate an individual's consistency of sentiment (i.e. a Standard Deviation of 0 would mean they were very consistent in their sentiment and 1 would mean they were very inconsistent).
Note that quote stats are likely to be meaningless beyond the aggregate score due to the tiny sample size. However, they are always provided just in case you find something useful there.

The idea behind Small Business Saturday is to direct consumers to mom-and-pop stores that probably didn't get swamped by the Black Friday bonanza. These small businesses might not have the best deal on a TV, but experts say they are an important factor in overall economic recovery.
